Finally, Just what Salt Lake needs!!

by burkepemberton at Citysearch

I ate at Butterfly last week and then went upstairs to the Depot to see my favorite band play after dinner. I have been waiting for something like this to come to Salt Lake City forever!! My grilfriend had the time of her life. The food at Butterfly was amazing, I really love the Peking Style Duck and the Gorgonzola and Macadamia crusted Filet Mignon. It's a beautiful fusion of California Cuisine and Asian Food. I also had the best Banana Bread Pudding that I have ever had in my life!! The service was attentive and friendly. The manager came by the table and told us about the history of the restaurant and made sure our experience was complete. What a great night out!! Thanks Butterfly!!

  • Pros: Service, Food, The Depot
  • Cons: Need Reservation, Need to advertise

Horrible customer service.

by stacykeyes at Citysearch

Granted it was a busy night but we waited for at least 30 minutes until our server came over to our table. We talked to several other employees, including the manager, asking as to when someone would be serving us but to no avail. So frustrating to be completely ignored. Once our server finally came by, she was not even apologetic and acted very cavalier as to us having to wait so long. Because of her attitude and the wait, we decided to go eat elsewhere as who knew how long it would take to actually get some food at that point.

I have eaten at Butterfly before but after this experience, I will not be returning again.

Great experience during Dine-O-Round

by outdoorpartner at Citysearch

Our reservation was at 8 PM and there were 6 other tables (of people eating). We were not required to join the "private club", even though we had drinks with our meal. We ordered the 3 course Dine-O-Round meal for $25. The salad appetizer had wonderful greens and a delicate dressing. The Onion soup was very high quality. The Salmon main course was cooked to perfection. The sauce was very original; this dish could NOT have been improved on. The Bento Box was original and I enjoyed it as a fun twist on the original Bento Boxes I often ate when I lived in Hawaii.

The wait staff was very attentive, and the restaurant decor was original. I especially enjoyed the mixed (alcoholic) speciality drinks.

  • Pros: Great food and service
  • Cons: Only paid parking

Never again

by cashcowsforus at Citysearch

We had seen the restaurant on Park City Television and it looked like a great place. We decided to check it out with some friends and were so dissapointed. We are used to Park City prices for pretty fair food but this place was definitely dead for a reason. Saturday at 7:00 at night we actually made a reservation but could have had the whole place to ourselves. The one positive thing I have to say is that the drinks were acceptable, except for the fact they served you about 1/3 a glass of wine, worse than typical for Utah. My husband and I ordered the fillet and were amazed at how poor quality it was. I could have bought a better $3 pre-packaged fake fillet at Albertsons. You would have thought it was a roast. The entire bottom of the steak, which was the size of a silver dollar, came off in a bizzare stringy mess! My husband wouldn't let me complain so that is why at 11:00 at night I'm writing this review so that other people don't waste their money. I'm not sure why there are quite a few positive reviews because we tried 3 appetizers and two entres between the four of us and none of it was that great. The lettuce cups had a bbq sauce which was absolutely bizarre for that kind of food. There is a reason this place is dead! The one nice thing, it was so dead you could have a nice conversation. If you're into that, spending quite a bit, and wondering what you were thinking go ahead and try it. My guess is that they'll be gone in 6 months and should be! Maybe they were stepping it up for valentines day and that is what all these positive reviews were for, the true evaluation: Dead on a Saturday night at 7:00!!!! That is all I should have to say, don't believe anything else you read!!! If its good, you'll have a reservation and still have to wait. We should have left after we walked in the door.

Great atmosphere & super friendly service

by mdwickes at Citysearch

We ate here on Valentine's Day and ate from a special menu so I'm not sure how good this review will reflect the food. But I can say that the service was superb. We never had empty glasses and the courses came quickly one after each other. The food was pretty pricey because of a "fixed Valentine's menu" but I can't complain about the quality.

I had the Seared sea scallop (delicious), Baby Arugula salad (pepper was a little strong), Ginger carrot soup (never had a soup as tasty), Medallion of filet mignon and vanilla pouched lobster (pretty small serving size but delicious), and a selection of cake and sweets (cookies were too hard but everything else was delicious.

Since I'm not a social drinker I can't review the wines but I did hear a few comments from other people around us that enjoyed the wine selection.

The restaurant is a private club so if you're not a member be prepared to pay for a membership ($5 for a temp membership). Afterwards we went upstairs to a private lounge (for free because we ate dinner...I'm not sure if that's just for Valentine's) with a live jazz band.

The atmosphere was great for a nice Valentine's date and has made it to my list of need-to-repeat restaurants.

  • Pros: Creative food dishes, Excellent service, Parking in nearby Gateway
  • Cons: Pricey for the value

Step Outside of Utah

by ajslc at Citysearch

I reallly like this restaurant but it's on the pricey side for Utah. The apps are amazing...try the Tuna Tartar if it's available and the Kalua Pig Lettuce Wraps...mmmm with a tasty hoisan BBQ sauce. The main dishes are amazing but will set you back about $25. If we go for dinner we usually stop for a couple apps before a show at the Depot.

The brunch is awesome - try the Chorrizo Tostadas....they are soo good. The brunch and lunch menu is pretty reasonable. I've had lunch twice - once I tried the Chicken Satay Salad - fantastic. The 2nd time we tried a lunch special - some sort of fish sandwich and it was very disapointing. Mainly because of the bun the used for the sandwich....it tasted like a wonder bread hamburger bun.....anyways the bread seemed a bit on the cheap end for a $15 lunch.

The only thing that bothers me about this restaurant is the "private club" issue. I know they have to do that because they are part of a club but it's lame to have an additional amount charged to your bill for a temporary membership or buy a 1 year membership for $20. I never had to pay for a membership to eat at a restaurant before - I know we're in Utah but, there has to be a way around that if you are ordering food.

We parked in the lot across the street - I think it's $2. Or they validate if you park in the Gateway Parking Garage. The decor is modern and colorful.

Overall the experience is great and the fusion food is fabulous.

  • Pros: Fantastic Food
  • Cons: Pricey

Another Great Meal In SLC

by bravokb at Citysearch

My boyfriend and I continue to eat our way through Salt Lake, and I continue to be surprised (pleasantly so)by the quality of food I am finding in Utah. We went to Butterfly late on a Friday night, but never felt rushed, or that we were keeping the staff. Service was a bit casual, but the food was outstanding! The Shrimp Salad was absolutely beautiful, calamari was tasty but oddly presented (big bowl o' squid!) and the Crispy Stuffed Chicken Breast was a wonderful end to our evening. Also of note, the signature sangria/sake cocktail and the b-fly cosmo were both terrific beverages and the wine list was fairly priced with some interesting choices.

  • Pros: Taste, value
  • Cons: ambience (bar-like), not as romantic as we would have liked.

Risky, unique and always incredible.

by malatova23 at Citysearch

The Butterfly cuisine is almost foreign to Utah. It is asian/pacific fusion with an american/california dining basis. The prices are moderate for the preparation and quality of food. The lemon salt chicken is incredibly tasty along with the awesome appetizer's; lettuce wraps, fresh spring rolls, and oyster shooters. They also have the most recommended Mojito drink in Utah. For a night of cocktails and appetizers or a wonderfully unique meal, Butterfly is highly recommended.

  • Pros: Unique dining experience
  • Cons: Location is unnoticed from the street.
