The block around which Salt Lake City was built.
by Contributor
Overview
This 10-acre block located in the middle of downtown Salt Lake City is one of the most popular tourist spots in Utah. Within its 15-foot walls are two visitor centers (one houses an 11-foot marble replica of Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's "The Christus"), the Tabernacle, the Assembly Hall and several monuments and statues.
The Experience
Free 45-minute tours of the square begin every five to 10 minutes at the 100-foot flagpole in the center of the block. Guides are happy to provide translators for visitors who don't speak English. In addition, the giant Jesus statue speaks more than 20 languages. At Christmastime, Temple Square is packed with lights (more than 300,000) and visitors (too many to count).
Fantastic

Visiting temple square is an awesome experience regardless of religious belief. It is an inspiration to see what dedicated american pioneers accomplished. The buildings are very ornate and stand strong showing the commitment and dedication these people put into their work. The tour helped me understand the how the city and state were begun, and some insight into what the mormons beleive. The religious info. was by no means preaching but more an explanation of why those beliefs inspired the people to work the way they did. I also learned how helpful the mormons are in researching my family history. I'm very glad I took the time to pull off the I-15 and find out what makes Utah what it is.
Heavenly

I love it. It is probably one of the most beautifully kept property I have ever seen. I love it at Christmas with all of the lights. It is amazing to see little flowers peeking up through the snow. I thought I was seeing things but no they were real. I really feel that it is as close to heaven as I am ever going to get. The protestors are a little overwhelming. I didn't appreciate what they were doing but once inside the walls of Temple Square you don't even notice them.
- Pros: Beautiful, Peacefull, Nice Staff
Absolutely beautiful

I've always thought Temple Square is beautiful in summer. I saw it last December for the first time at Christmas and was blown away by the beauty.
The missionaries are always well-informed, friendly and helpful. I'm not LDS, and I've never felt pressured in any way by the missionaries -- you give respect, you get respect.

Very nice

I really liked visiting this most impressive place. I have been all over the U.S. and can think of no other city in which the middle of town is centered around such an impressive building. It really stands out. The only thing I did not like were those who apparently oppose the Mormons taunting and yelling some rather awful things at other visitors. I would go on days when I could avoid these horrible, fundementalist whakos!
- Pros: Free, Location, Informative
- Cons: Protesters, Crowded, Too much to see
