I live nearby and always crave the rice bowls! I always normally get the steak, pork luau, or the chicken and steak combination with the regular teryaki sauce. The vegetables are crisp, and a small is perfect!!! I must admit that the workers seem pretty unhappy, and that the tables are cramped together!!! But the rice bowls are what I come there for :)

RUMBI has good food and decent flavors but executes at a very poor level. Wait times often are more what you'd expect at a nice restaurant than at a quick-serve type establishment. I have waited for over 20 minutes twice in the last month. Combine that with their pricing and you might as well go to your local brewpub and get some real food.

This hasn't always been the case and Rumbi seems to not really care anymore (at least in their Salt Lake City stores). The stores are dirty and their employees don't really seem interested in doing anything more than punching out. I'd recommend calling in your order and picking it up so you don't get too frustrated waiting when you could go next door to Rubios and get fish tacos for half the price in half the time.

  • Pros: pretty decent food
  • Cons: slow, dirty,

I;ve eaten at the downtown and Murray locations and have never been disappointed in the food! I'm a salad eater and have tried them all! They are all so good and fresh (and unique) I can't pick a favorite! Well okay, maybe I can...it's the Aloha Chicken! Yummy if you love mango. Friends have tried the rice bowls and raved about how good and healthy they are. Portions are generous, so go there even if you are very hungry...you won't be disappointed in the food. Do however be aware of two things. First, the downtown restaurant is not open until 8:00 pm on sunday as they advertise both on city search and their website. We went there for dinner last sunday and they had closed at 7:00 pm. While I was waiting out front for my son to grab salads at Rubio next door, I watched them turn away 17 different parties (all expecting to find the place open). Not many restaurants in town can afford to disappoint so many people and stay in business. Why do no restaurants cater to 8-10 pm diners on sunday?!!! Second, the tables are so close together you must pay attention and not bump others plates! As a result there is more than usual noise. All in all the ONLY thing that keeps me going back is the food...and it is worth it! I just wish they would either stay open later or show customers they care about wasting our time by posting the correct closing time on internet sites!

  • Pros: Very good food that is unusually fresh and creative and a good value!
  • Cons: Loud, crowded tables, and not open late enough for dinner diners!

This is one of my very favorite places to eat. This was the first location and I think the food is by far the best at this location. If you arrive during the lunch hour on a weekday, the parking gets a little crazy. There is also limited sitting so you may be better off getting the food to go. Either way I have received great service dining in and ordering take out. Their speciality are the rice bowls that come in multiple flavors but my favorite is the jerk chicken. They also have amazing salads. The Hula chicken is my favorite. Most of the salads have a vinaigrette based dressing which I love. The menu items range around $7-$8.

PROS: Great food

CONS: small seating area

I love Rumbi Island Grill. I've eaten at a number of their loations, and I'm always given great food and great service. I particularly recommend the chicken or stake (or combo) rice bowl with terriaki sauce (or jamacian jurk [really that word has an 'e', but the word filter wouldn't let me write that word in my review], if you like a little more kick) on noodles.

This is one of my favorite lunchtime haunts. I've even converted my boss, two of my coworkers, my wife, and my inlaws.

Here's a tip: the serving sizes are generous, so you can easily split a rice bowl. My wife and I will usually split the bowl, or I will save half for lunch tomorrow. If you ask, they'll even give you an extra plate to make sharing easier.

Great food. Great restaurant. Perfect for lunch.

  • Pros: Food, service, value
  • Cons: noise

Date & time of visit: Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 @ 1:45pm.

This was my first visit to Rumbi. I was very impressed and I'm actually sorry that I had not gone there sooner.

I had the steak and chicken combo bowl with pasta instead of rice, prepared Bali style, which is, with a spicy peanut sauce instead of a teriyaki sauce.

The portions of steak and chicken were generous. The veggies (slivered carrots, red peppers, zucchini, and broccoli were cooked to perfection (crunchy not soggy)). The peanut sauce was spicy and just a little sweet. I had the medium size bowl and the portion was perfect.

I recommend Rumbi for when you want a healthy and different alternative to the same old stuff.

  • Pros: selection, fresh ingredients, something different

Peter B the editor and food critic on this restaurant was so way off the boat. I normally go with his judgment but this time I cannot! I thought the food was and is GREAT. A few associates and I eat there every other week and we have tried nearly the whole menu which changes or should I say is added to regularly. The Voodoo Salad is still my favorite with a dressing that kicks back just enough to say hello. If you want to know the truth, I cannot wait to see where theyll go next.

  • Pros: atmosphere, phone or fax an order, Explosive flavors
  • Cons: crowded from noon - 1

The Scene
It's a peaceful oasis in the midst of the 7th East hubbub. Order at the counter, then take a number and your meal will be brought to your table.

The Food
The "Island" theme apparently means everything comes out sweet. Virtually everything on the menu is flavored with pineapple, peanuts or coconut--the "spicy jerk marinade" has nothing the least bit hot to offer.

Choose one of the "island bowls" ($5.39-$6.99)--filled with fresh vegetables, plenty of rice and either chicken, steak, shrimp or tofu. All look and taste the same, with the exception of the smallish portions of meat.

This Place is GREAT! The tropical salads, Rumbi rice, Hawaiian teriyaki, jerk steak... the list of the good food can go on and on. I cannot believe that all their dressings and sauces are made fresh from scratch, and finally their opening more.

  • Pros: atmosphere, delivery
  • Cons: one location

This place is wonderful. Different than your other typical joints within the valley. I have had everything on the menu it is all great. If I must choose one it would be the Voodo Chicken Salad! You can't beat it!
