Decent beer, lousy food, lousy service

by mockturtle

After being ignored by the hostess for 5 minutes, we sat down to dinner. I ordered the bourbon burger, but was disappointed with the quality- a processed, pre-made and frozen patty with a cheddar single and a dry bun. There was no bourbon flavor in the burger at all, and it was a low-medium quality burger at best. The steak fries were mushy and cold, but edible with enough salt and pepper.

Service was poor, but that may be because it was fairly busy that night, being at the end of the Sundance Film Festival. The beer is good, but other local brewpubs (Redrock and Bohemian) have better beer and excellent food for the same price.

  • Pros: Good beer
  • Cons: Bad food, bad service

Spotty Food Poor Service

by utwonderwoman

My husband and I frequent Squatters fairly regularly. Or, I should say we used to. I enjoy their turkey burgers. When they are done correctly, they are flavorful and incredible juicy. I generally choose the side salad rather than fries (fries are bland, even the garlic fries.) They ALWAYS insist on plating the salad with the burger. This would not be a problem if the salad were not sitting underneath the heat lamp until it is hot, wilted, and disgusting.

Service - the service is poor and unattentive. I cannot tell you how many times we just have our menus thrown down at us while our waitstaff sips on her drink behind the bar. We can sit and gaze longingly at our food under the heat lamp while the wings become soft and lukewarm, or our sald become nice and warm.

The hostesses and the wait staff are not concerned with customer service. And apparently as the service continually slides downhill, neither does management. I like the food and the location but the spotty quality and horrible service make it a difficult recommend.

  • Pros: Great Beer Selection
  • Cons: Service is terrible - food can be great or horrible - food is generally not hot.

Terrible Food Terrible Service

by lighterfluid

A bad food night. My friends said their hamburgers were pallatable, but the rest of the meal was a total disaster. The food is bland, and uninspiring. I couldn't eat the pathetic artichoke dip- heavy cream served with very stale bread. The order was wrong, for everyone at the table. A true disaster of an evening.

So bad, I didn't bother saying anything to the manager because there is no way this resturaunt can redeem itself. I will never go back.

  • Pros: decent garlic fries
  • Cons: food is bland at best, service is awful, and a level of unwarranted pretention

Bad service swayed my opinion in the red for an otherwise nice place.

Squatters was the restaurant we wound up in during our first two visits to Salt Lake City while house hunting. On our first visit we waited in the foyer for probably three or four minutes before someone acknowledged us and took us to a seat. Not a long time, but we were the only people there. The host was just chatting with other employees. After we were at the table the service was pretty slow. I'm usually pretty patient, but this was disappointing. Though our first visit revealed poor customer service, we believed it would be a isolated incident and returned to Squatters on our second visit when it was convenient to our location for lunch. Our second visit to Squatters, probably three weeks later, we again waited several minutes while a different host yapped it up with other employees, ignoring us waiting to be seated. This time, once we were at the table, NO ONE came to offer us ANYTHING for ten minutes (yes I really timed it). We wound up walking out and no one even realized we had left. It was as if we were invisible. I was disappointed and it greatly influenced our take on the people of Salt Lake City. The food we received on our first visit was not bad at all. A slightly original take on American, "casual dining" / bar food. We liked the food, but the service was terrible. They were not really busy. We visited on a weekday night and again for lunch. Though several people love Squatters, I'm thoroughly turned off by their apparently very poor management / customer service. I don't expect special treatment, but I'd at least like to be treated with basic respect. I would not recommend Squatters and will not return.

  • Pros: Nice micro-brew atmosphere, pretty good, original food
  • Cons: Very poor service, extremely poorly managed restaurant

Yummy beer good food

by dandeliongrrrl

Squatter's has some good beer. And the food's not bad either. I ordered the fish and chips off their late night menu a few weeks ago. They were flaky and good. My friend got the calamari appetizer. It was big enough that he kept it as a meal. Squatter's is a good place to go for beer and pub food.

Bad and I mean BAD, food and service.

by cgriffis

My wife and I used to frequent Squatters on a regular basis, before moving away for a number of years. After our return we went back to the familiar and what used to be a great eating establishment. Boy, were we disappointed. The service was horrible. Our apps came out about 30-40 minutes after we ordered, then our entrees came out separately, spaced by about 15 minutes. Obvioulsy one of the meals was forgotten or worse. No explaination or apology, just business as usual. My wife ordered the fish and chips, on the memory on how good it used to be. It was so nasty, upon taking a bite, I was forced to eject it into my napkin. Dinner turned into a two hour ordeal that was completely awful on all fronts, plus the added stress of thinking we just ate some bad fish. The beer is still good, and I would recommend having a few pints and leaving for a better run place to eat your dinner.

  • Pros: The beer is still as good as ever
  • Cons: The food and service couldn't get any worse

Mediocre food, average prices.

by andieleigh1

The food was mediocre, the air conditioning a bust, and with the construction it was not very clean. Perhaps when all that is cleared up it will get back to the decent grungy mediocre food it used to be.

  • Pros: Non-pretentious can go in your gym clothes..
  • Cons: People do go in gym clothes??

Horrible service and food

by kellmarc

We used to love Squatters but it has gone downhill very fast. We ate there on a Thursday night and had the WORST service - had to flag waitress to get drinks when empty, food took forever (four of use were there for 1hour and 45 minutes from sit down to paying check - a bit ridiculous for this type of restaurant). When waitress finally brought food she said that another waiter had taken one of our party's dinner so they had to make again. Once the rest of us started eating, we realized that they had just let our food sit there in the meantime - hamburger bun was soggy, fries were cold, etc. They should have either brought our food out and told us what happened so other had to wait or cooked our entire table's order again.

Will not eat here again and it's too bad since it used to be a regular spot for us.

  • Pros: Outdoor dining
  • Cons: Horrible service, food not fresh

GREAT ALL AROUND!!!!!!!

by dinotracy

We love Squatters!!! We've lived in UT for several months now and eat at Squatters at least 2x a week. The beer is FANTASTIC! If calamari is something you enjoy, give their's a try. It's always delicious!! Another reason we enjoy hanging out there is because you find other people who know how to enjoy a casual evening out with good beer and food. A rarity in Utah. Plus, they have a patio for outside seating in the summer. We highly recommend trying Squatters!

  • Pros: BEER, ATMOSPHERE, SERVERS
  • Cons: Not enough free parking, won't allow dogs on the patio
