Flies!.
We drove by the Vertical Diner this weekend, and from the exterior it looked like a classic, fun, little diner with the atmosphere you'd see on a Food Network show. We thought we would give it a try, hoping for some good food...not the case.
I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns. The biscuits were overworked, tough and hardly recognizeable. One was a round ball of dough on my plate that I could only stab with a knife, because I couldn't cut it. They served fried potatoes, instead of hashbrowns, that were too spicy and tasted like it was covering up the flavor of old oil in the frier.
The worst part though were the flies. We were constantly swatting swarms of flies away from our food. The place also had a faint odor of cats. It had a cute, mismatched asian/diner theme that looked like fun, but in retrospect, we should have just left.
If they cleaned up the place and if the quality of the food backed up a nice menu, it could have a lot of potential. As is, not a good dining experience.
God Knows If You Don't Tip!.
Vertical Diner is owned by the same guy who owns Sage's Cafe, and they are considered sister restaurants. I've eaten at Sages for years so I was really excited to hear about this place.
I went with a friend and we ended up waiting 45 minutes for two entrees. This first time they gave us some of their fried vegan chicken and ranch for free for the wait. The burrito I ordered was unsatisfactory, but the chicken was amazing! You could serve it to anyone and they would never know that it isn't real chicken.
After that I started ordering the chicken to go all the time. I don't go there anymore, and here's why. They would say it would be ready in 15 minutes, but when I would show up on time for my order I have always had to wait around 10 minutes. I started coming by later than they said and I would still end up waiting. After that first visit the service is anything but good. I'm not sure why the food takes so long, because there is hardly ever anyone there. The place is always dirty, I don't even want to know what the kitchen looks like. Every time I go there are new employees and they're not exactly friendly. There is a tip jar on the counter that says "God Knows If You Don't Tip!" Well, God also knows when your service is unsatisfactory!
Great Vegetarian Food. We were visiting SLC and found the Diner listed in the 65 Best Breakfasts list and since we are vegetarians decided to try it out. We got there at 9:30 for break fast and were told that it did not open until 10...we were a little miffed....but were willing to wait and it certainly paid off...The Chocolate Chip pancake with the maple was the best i have had. I would certainly go there for more!
Great food great staff!. What A wonderful place to get great americana diner food! With a new healthy and animal friendly twist! I love anything on the menu. I love that they serve breakfast all day. And I love there NON dairy Milk shakes that taste Better than the real thing. I enjoy all the themed nights with the differant dinners on the weekends. Very clean very hip building. And the prices are good.
Chicken Fried Steak on Thursdays!.
This is a great restaurant if you're vegetarian/vegan, or in the mood for some amazing banana pancakes. The coffee is not the best, but you can order real maple syrup with your pancakes, and they have a lot of fun breakfast items that are fun to try.
Their special on Thursday evenings is Chicken Fried Steak. I have a friend from Ogden that drives down to Salt Lake for it. It's excellent.
The service is usually slow, but friendly. Sometimes the diner is not spotless.
Good vegetarian food.
I liked the food, and I felt comforted knowing I wasn't eating any animal products. I had a breaded "chicken" sandwich that was pretty tasty, and their fries are great. I can't wait to go back and try some more. They're brunch looked good and the desserts also looked yummy.
The diner was a little dirty though when we arrived, like the tables needed to wiped off and we had to ask for napkins and silverware, but I think its because they need more hired help.
