Editorial Review for 230 Fifth – by Katie Heffernan

In Short
Gilded elevators open onto a penthouse cocktail den practically stretching to the horizon. The mirror- and window-lined room looks like an '80s interpretation of the art deco era, with low-slung suede sofas in deep sunset hues and some of owner-art collector Steven Greenberg's 1940s modernist furnishings. A chrome staircase leads to a sprawling rooftop like you've never seen before: Almost 360 unobstructed degrees--including a dead-on of the Empire State--alongside breezy palm trees.

I went to this place on a Wednesday with my cousin, I spent alot of money but really enjoyed myself, so much so i decided to bring my wife there. When i got there i noticed a long line and a short line. I thought it might have been a private party, so i let my wife online while I stood by the entrance to see how things we going I noticed the shorter line was for bottle service and people on the longer line (mainly white crowd) were being asked if they wanted to do bottle service but were still being let in whether they did or not. I went back on the da line waited another twenty minutes, right before we got to the front of the line I notice a black couple being told to get off, i don't know why but the white couple in front of us and behind the first black couple we let in, when that couple complained the bouncer said ohh those people come here every friday and spend lots of money,, then he got to us and asked us if we wanted to do table service, when we said no we also got kicked off the line, as we stood there like idiots, we notice the trend, white people in and no white minorities out,.. as if we didn't get enough we went to 40/40 where they don't descriminate got in enjoyed ourselves, the when we left while walking to the car we noticed there was no line in from of 230, so we tried once again.. when we got there i asked the yes man in front of the door how much is the cover he said there was none,, so i waited for my wife because she was behind me when she got there another two white girls showed up behind us. The sam guy the that just told me there was no cover now told me the doors we closed,, i was so angry at the blantant disrespect i told my wife let's go,, then as i'm walking away i noticed the the two white girls being let in...WOW,, ALL I CAN SAY,,, EVEN AS WE HAVE A BLACK MAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT RACISM STILL EXIST,, I HATE WHEN WHITE PEOPLE SAY IT DOESNT' BECAUSE THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THEY DON'T LIVE THE LIFE OF A BLACK MAN OR WOMAN. IT EXIST.

Pros: ATMOSPHERE, ROOFTOP

Cons: RACISM, RACISM RACISM

Went there a few nights ago with a girlfriend. I am a black female, was sporting flip flops and jeans and had absolutely no trouble getting in. In fact, my friend (who was also wearing flip flops) and I almost didn't go in since we saw everyone else was dressed up. One of the bouncers went out of his way to come over to where we were standing and told us that we were okay to come up. When we got up there, there were plenty of other black people there. In fact, it was more diverse than some of the other places I've been. Anyways, my friends had a table so I didn't experience the bar area and I didn't stay that long, but it seems like a pretty fun place. Although, I did get eaten up by mosquitos! I will probably go to this place up again, maybe on a weekend to see the different crowd it attracts.

An expansive deco penthouse lounge and tropical wraparound rooftop, both with views to envy.  See the full editorial review.
