Beware of Dr. Robert Curtis in Sr. Mark's Hospital.
Robert Curtis was my anesthesiologist for surgery at St. Mark's hospital six weeks ago. I only met him 10 minutes before surgery. I should NEVER have trusted him.
Before surgery I made it clear to him that I wanted to be aware as long as possible before surgery and then as quickly as possible after surgery. He assured me he would respect my wishes.
About a minute before being taken into the operating room, Dr. Curtis reappeared in the waiting area. While he was handling my IV I said, "please don't give me anything, I want to be aware while I'm being taken into the operating room." He told me not to worry, and specifically said he wasn't giving me anything.
He LIED.
He gave me Versed, a powerful sedative with an even more powerful amnesia effect. I remember nothing for the next 6 hours.
A week later when I discovered what he had done to me, I confronted him. He told me he lied for my own good. He further told me it's best that patients not remember anything relative to the time before or after the surgery, again telling me that I just don't know what's best for me.
He also denied having anything to do with the fact that I was given 2 more doses of versed after surgery. My medical records clearly show he signed the order.
Bottom line--if you're looking for an anesthesiologist who will be honest with you, respect your wishes and your intelligence, and let you participate in your own health care RUN from Robert Curtis!
