Best in Town. It's hard to find a great quality gym with how many Gold's opened up in this state. Xcel has done a tremendous job since I joined back in 1999 and after everything all of my friends have said about other gyms in comparison I can confidently say Xcel is the best in town. I frequent the Holiday and West Jordan location and everyone is always curtious and friendly.
You will not be able to cancel this membership if you live within 30 miles of a location.. The equipment and facilities are very nice. Alot of the people I have dealt with are very friendly and professional. My complaint and reason for giving a single star is a result of my own experience at this gym. When I went in to get a membership the individual who signed me up lied to me about the cancelation policy of this gym in order to get me to sign a 2 year membership agreement. I don't know if this meant more commission for him or what his reasons were for doing it, but I specifically told him that I would be moving in 1 year and that the location was situational depending on which job offer I accepted. I asked to have a 1 year membership, but was quickly taked into getting the 2 year agreement with the reassurance that in the event that I did move I would be able to pay a small cancelation fee and be on my way. Now as it turns out the location I moved to is still within 30 miles of an Xcel Gym location and this is apparently a 'catch' in the agreement which leaves me paying another year on my membership and I have been told that I have no way out and no way to cancel. This is likely the fault of one employee and not the gym as a whole, but regardless Xcel needs to take responsibility for properly training and ensuring their employees are not lying to new customers just to get their membership numbers up.
Honesty is the best policy, right?. This is a brief comment of another citysearch members review of Xcel Fitness, at both the Holladay and West Jordan locations. I would never want to mention names here (posted by rickut) because that would be both innapropriate and could potentially cause a serious legal issue. But this person went on about how horrible their experience was at Xcel, and actually thought they were justified enough to name each person that caused them so much pain and suffering. What a joke! None of the fitness professionals at Xcel Fitness would ever tell any member that they would "reassign" them to another trainer if they weren't going to purchase their services. Each and every Fitness Professional I have ever come across have been more than willing to meet with me to take body composition measurements, go over training techniques, nutrition, cardio, and anything else. I have been a member at this gym for six months and I went through the results orientation process, and it is like no other initial gym membership orientation you will find in the industry. A certified Fitness Professional spends an entire two hours with you (at no charge) to go over your exercise, nutrition and wellness goals, and frankly anything else you ask of them. The first hour is an depth look at your nutrition, where they set you up on the bodybugg program (www.bodybugg com). This is a truly amazing program that I would recommend to anyone looking to lose some weight or just to better analyze your nutrition in vs. calories out. The second hour is the free hour of personal training where a trainer actually takes your through a full hour of exercises that are built around how your body moves and any type of muscular imbalances are also addressed in this complimentery hour as well!! The review by rickut (oops, there went their name again) posted 4/15 & 6/7 (same review posted twice?) should be deleted! Thank you Xcel Fitness Staff for all of your hard work and dedication!
Xcel Gym Guarantee = Gimmick. I joined xcel gym to be able to workout with a friend of mine and for my surprise I was jerked around just because I didn?t want to buy training sessions. First Ben(holladay trainer) canceled my orientation meeting 4 times then he told me if I am not buying training sessions he would assign me to see another person. Finally had my orientation with Michael(west jordan trainer) and we scheduled the final orientation for another day and guess what? Michael canceled me 3 hours before it! (Michael had to go help his girfriend to get a new dress! Can you believe it?) Michael set me up to see Cathy(west jordan trainer) on the exactly last day of the 30day money back guaranteed. What a coincidence! I called Chris(west jordan sales manager) and told him the situation and he told me he would wait and see me right after my appointment with Cathy and guess what? Chris was gone!!! He didn?t wait for me and left the gym. Conclusion: I can not cancel my membership and have my money back anymore! Isn?t that a perfect set up?
Don't bring your friends. When I signed up at the West Jordan location they made me sign a two-year contract. Maybe that's standard procedure but it seemed like a long contract term to me. Then they gave some 3-day guest passes. I decided to bring my husband in with me so we took our son to the daycare (which he loves) and went to the gym. Day 1 we had no problems. Day 2 there was an arrogant man with a power trip at the front desk who wanted to take my husband on the whole tour and talk him into joining. We only had 40 minutes before we had to pick up our son in day care so he said that he's not really interested in joining. The employee then took away his guest pass and said that the passes were only for people who were going to join. Needless to say, that made us both pretty angry, we didn't get to work out, my son didn't get to play at the daycare, and numerous phone calls to try and get out of my contract have been inreturned. This gym is fine unless you bring someone in who isn't for sure going to join. The way the contract is set up, even if you die your estate still has to pay a $50 cancellation fee. I suppose they're all like this but I'm still angry that I have to pay a monthly fee for someone to be rude to me.
