Editorial Review for Desert Star Restaurant – by Helen Hodgson
The Scene
Decorating the barn-like dining room are old-time Western photos, patriotic bunting and a mural featuring a covered wagon. Meals are served at picnic tables covered with red-and-white checkered tablecloths, while country-western music plays in the background. It's the kind of place where servers call you "hon" and conversation may be interrupted by raucous birthday celebrations.
The Food
From a 6-oz tenderloin to a 2-lb porterhouse, grilled steaks dominate the menu. Fork-tender barbecue--chicken, pork ribs, smoked sausage--comes with extra sauce for dipping and a warm washcloth to wipe your sticky fingers. Fresh sourdough bread, a cup of chunky homemade soup or a mixed green salad (try the surprisingly spicy chipotle ranch dressing), and cumin-accented ranch beans accompany each entree. Baked potatoes are extra and fries are not available. Dessert choices are limited to apple and razzleberry cobblers or a brownie sundae, served warm with vanilla bean ice cream.

Not a lot of variety on the menu, but the steaks have always been excellent and the price absolutely can't be beat. Their steaks do seem to cook slightly to the 'well' side. Even my wife, who likes her steaks medium-well and can't stand pink meat thought she would get medium next time. Seating is in the open, like at a 'Western Style' Cafe. Tables are actually picnic benches covered by red and white checkered table cloths. Benches are without back support. The wait can be very long on weekends. I recommend reservations if you have a large group. Your family will be happy here. I often take 8 or 10 people at a time to this place. While you are there, make plans to go see their Playhouse 'farce' that they run next door, especially on weekends. Buy tickets well in advance if you want good seats.
Pros: Good Food, Fun atmosphere, Very Cheap for Steak
Cons: Not a lot of variety, 'Western' seating, Often crowded

Finally, great comedy where you don't have to cover the kid's ears. Every time I go, I come away with a side ache from laughing so hard.
Pros: Family oriented, Funny, Affordable
