The Happy Sumo Sushi Bar and Restaurant

Award winning sushi in a refreshingly comfortable atmosphere.

Given the fact that, these days, fine sushi restaurants are as numerous as oil change drive-thrus, reaching the top of this category is no small achievement. In most cases, and as long as you've got high- quality cuts of raw fish, sushi is sushi. Much depends, then, on what you do with it, how you do it and where it's done.

In this case, we're talking about The Happy Sumo's mind-boggling array of delicious rolls, and delectable extras you'll find nowhere else in the valley. Maybe it's the sumo sauce or the chefs' artful use of cucumbers, lime, chicken breast or half a dozen other ingredients most establishments never bother with.

Even if raw fish isn't your thing, in which case you can order from an array of cooked entrees, the stylish atmosphere makes you feel you're deep in the heart of Tokyo on a rainy evening.

Editorial Review for The Happy Sumo Sushi Bar and Restaurant – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
The chic dining room is inviting, with sunny walls, large windows, chenille banquettes and colorful earthenware plates. Sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs, or tuck into a secluded booth--perfect for a romantic date. Service is friendly.

The Food
Start off with a bowl of flavorful miso soup then dive right into the sushi menu. About 20 varieties of nigiri sushi are offered (two bite-sized pieces of fish, each served on rice) in addition to the maki (rolls cut into six or eight pieces). A number of specialty rolls are standouts, including the Wasatch roll (spicy salmon, yellowtail, cucumbers and flying fish eggs) and the Dragon roll (crab and avocado topped with spicy sauce and flying fish eggs).

I eat sushi out about 2x/wk. Happy Sumo has the best nigiri tuna in town and possibly the best rolls. Overall the #1 sushi place in salt lake area. The outdoor seating area is great on warm days and evenings - along with the overall atmosphere of gateway. If you set inside it is nice as well with large booths, sushi bar and open tables (no too close together). They have the best cucumber wrapped rolls in town - closest place I have found to compete with these is in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The one thing I wish they had was a happy hour or special sometime....but I guess with food this good - they don't need to. Simply put - you will not find a better overall sushi restaurant in Salt Lake!!!

Pros: Best sushi it town, parking easier than most downtown sushi places due to gateway - valet as well

Cons: wish they had a happy hour - thats about all

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! The Happy Sumo is now something I Iook forward to every weekend. It has become a ritual between me and my friends. The service couldn't be better, the atmosphere is hip and exciting and the sushi is better than any other overpriced sushi bar you will find in salt lake. It gets super busy so make sure to arrive early, and the best part....you are bound to see a Jazz player in there eating as well. If you want to spend your time and MONEY well, go to the Sumo, it is worth every penny...and every bite :).

Pros: SERVICE!!!!! Hot servers. Yummy Sushi.

Cons: can't complain about a thing.
