Best Quick Casual Mexican. Food is fresh, healthy and tastes great. Portions are large and you get what you want on your item. I really like the Barbacoa Pork. The employees are friendly. You can't get a better meal for $6.50. Food is better and lower priced than competitors. Only negative is it is often too busy for lunch.
Big, Almost Too Big.
The last time I went to Barbacoa it was awesome. I would definately have to say that the Honey Sweet Pork Burrito is the best Sweet Pork in all of Utah. There is nothing that compares to it.
I read that some people are saying they don't give out too much food. That is true if you tell them not to put an item on, but if you tell them as follows: Rice, black beans, sweet pork, cheese, all three salsas, sour cream, lettuce, and cilantro, then you will see that the burritos become so big the workers can hardly fold them up. Get yourself a water (or 1.59 for a soda) and you have a complete filling meal for only $7.00! That's not too bad if you ask me.
I suspect they use MSG. I have had a migraine for 2 days ever since I ate a chicken burrito at Barbacoa. I suspect they are using MSG in their cooking. It can also cause stomach and intestinal problems (which I read in another review) I will not be going back there.
Best Burrito's in town.
I love this place, I recently made friends with one of the staff and every time I come in he gives me a free soda :)
Also, try this combination, it's the only one I get
Burrito, no rice, Pinto Beans, Barbacoa Pork, Cheese, Hot Sauce, Sour Cream, Lettuce..... mm delicious, and there Salsa to go with the chips is incredible.
Gone downhill. 5 years ago Barbacoa was by far the best burrito place in town. Then they started jacking up prices every 6 months. I still went there until one day I ordered a steak burrito -- the young woman could barely understand what I was ordering, but I digress -- she got me a nice big scoop of steak, and SHOOK THE SPOON so steak fell off because apparently she had given me too much. I then realized that it's turning into a Mexican Subway where workers are encouraged to screw customers. I only go there now when I have a gift card, and I would like to note that the steak is not nearly as good as it used to be. Go to Chipotle, Cafe Rio, or Molcasalsa instead.
What?? "SMALL PORTIONS".. I don't know what these people are saying, "SMALL PORTIONS". Whatever. I can eat alot of food, and I can't even finish off a burrito!! I guess there are alot of competetive eaters in SLC, because they give you alot of food.
Overpriced, Small Serving Sizes. The food is still pretty good, but it has become WAY overpriced and the serving sizes keep getting smaller and smaller. They're half what they were originally. I don't feel the need to personally finance their further expansion. There are plenty of other places out there that offer good, reasonably priced fare.
Beware sensitive stomachs. It was Sunday and my usual big burrito spot downtown was closed, so I needed to get my fix elsewhere. That led me straight to Barbacoa. At my other joint, I usually get a shredded beef burrito enchilada style. Barbacoa offered nearly the same thing. I was very happy with the taste and the proportions. However, my girlfriend and I had VERY sour stomachs later and spent a good deal of time in the bathroom. Sometimes, my stomach is sensitive, but never at my usual burrito joint. I don't know if I just went on a bad day, but right now I have no intentions of going back there ... as my stomach is STILL a little shakey even as I write this review.
Not the cheapest - but the best!. Barbacoa has been my favorite stop for burritos since I discovered it. On the trendy corner of 9th & 9th, it doesn't have the most fabulous atmosphere compared to its surroundings (Tower theater, Coffee Garden, Centered City Yoga). But they have the best burritos ever! While it's more expensive than your typical Taco Bell, they'll fill up a man-sized belly (and as a petite woman, I usually get 2 meals out of one veggie burrito). And try all 3 salsas!
A neighborhood eatery with huge custom burritos at a great price..
In Short
A clean, casual place with a busy open kitchen right behind the burrito assembly line that offers plenty of seating. The custom-built burritos and tacos bulge with fresh ingredients. Start with cilantro-lime rice, select black or pinto beans and add chicken, steak, barbacoa (slow-cooked shredded beef) or carnitas. Or get everything in a bowl with the tortilla on the side and you've got a burrito bowl--a little easier to eat than the fat wraps.
