Editorial Review for Big Cottonwood Canyon – by Citysearch Staff
Overview
Popular with campers, hikers and rock climbers during the summer, Big Cottonwood Canyon is a short (30-minute) drive from Salt Lake City. Perfect for day hikes, the canyon offers spectacular views of wildflowers and evergreen trees. In the fall, the multicolored leaves are breathtaking. In the winter, skiers flock to Brighton and Solitude ski resorts for a day on the slopes.
The Experience
Several moderately difficult climbs are available fairly close to the canyon's base. Park your car at the S-Curve 4 miles up Big Cottonwood. Approximately 10 variations of climbs--ranging from 5.10 to 5.12 in difficulty--are accessible from this point. Shoes, harness, belay device and a chalk bag should be your first purchases. It's a good idea to purchase your shoes and harness in person rather than through the mail.
