They were out of the first two menu items we wanted, so we both settled for a chicken sandwich. 3 minutes later, our server came out with two of the worst chicken sandwiches I have ever seen or eaten. How it was cooked so fast is anyone's guess, but after taking one bite of the cold/hard bun and the cold (dry) chicken breast...I knew! $9 for a cold hamburger bun with a tiny, cold piece of chicken, some red onions and a piece of wilted lettuce. Everything was cold and dry. I don't know how anyone can charge so much for something that could potentially send you to the doctor! Both my girlfriend and I only took one bite of the sandwich before telling the waitress that we would not eat or pay for the cold, limp food in front of us. She blankly said ok. I offered her $4 for the soda's we had consumed and she ACTUALLY took my money and offered no apology what so ever. The entire staff just watched us walk out like they could care less! Unbelievable! I would go to KFC before trying this place again! No respect for their customers or their food.
good for NJ but not for TX. I think this place is quite good, yummy beans and pulled pork and sauce, as good as any BBQ I have had around here.. BUT I took my boyfriend from TX there and he was unhappy, as his brisket was dry and not smoky enough and tasted like roast beef (in his opinion). My friend from Kansas City likes it but she has been in UT for some time. They do have beer!!!
Strange sickness. When we got there, we were seated near the front and the customer service was fine, though in the back it sounded like there was a lot of goofing off. We got our food, portions were not very large but ok. Taste was good, but not great. After we left, 2 out of 5 of us got really bad stomach aches. I was one of them. I'm not sure what caused it exactly, but I haven't felt that ill so suddenly in a long time. I don't think I'll go back.
Cheap and tasty.
We often frequent SugarhouseBBQ when we are in a hurry or don't feel like getting dressed to the nines for a meal out.
The restaurant is very casual as you would expect from a BBQ joint and can range from very quiet midweek to teeming on weekends. As such the atmosphere can be very jekyll and hyde in nature, a ghost town one minute and a cacophony of noise the next.
The quality of the food is top notch. I will admit to not being a conniseur of BBQ by any means, hey I'm English. We don't have it coursing through our veins ike you Americans do. In spite of this though, I have never had anything I thought was less than great. From the hordes of people hunched over great towering plates of ribs it seems conclusive to me.
Their sandwhiches and sides make for an easy quick meal if your in a hurry and at $6 a sandwhich knocks the socks off the rubbish served at fast food joints for the same price. How the huge corporate fast food places stay in business with gems like Sugarhouse BBQ out there, is beyond me. I digress.
If your in a little less of a rush, try one of the bigger entree plates and a beer. My favourite is the sugarhouse platter where you can try two of the meats heaped high on your plate, with any two of their sides. All for a measly $11.95. Washed down with a couple of cold beers makes for an excellent way to relax after a long hard day of work.
I can't think of any negatives beyond the noisy-ness during the busy periods. It's obviously a great place for families to go and feed their kids something healthy and tasty which doesnt come with a plastic toy ;)
Bear in mind they also do take out on busy nights, just give them 20-30 minutes notice before you turn up.
BBQ Done Right!. Fantastic BBQ! I have tried many of the items on the menu, and have never been disappointed. I bring family and freinds from all over to enjoy this diamond. Strongly recommend this location if you are looking for a taste of true BBQ.
Great Spare Ribs & Killer sauce. Great Spare ribs, so so baby backs. Killer Sauces all around. Greek roasted potatoes are tops and so is the cucumber salad.
babybacks were really dry!!. When they say "dry ribs," they mean it. The beans were OK but a little spicy for me. The cornbread was dry. The roasted potatoes were good. I won't be going back. Service was excellent.
This is food to go out of your way for. Ah Sugar House. Amazing brisket and pulled pork. Out of this world baked beans (with pieces of smoked meat in them - not for the vegetarians). Really good Lemony Garlicy Roasted Greek Potatoes. You need to know whether you prefer your brisket dry (lower fat) or wet (pieces of fat) and know which way to order it. Also, if you like garlic, don't miss the tomato garlic salad dressing on a side salad. If those items appeal to you, SHBBQ, is well worth it. Other items are fine - not bad, not amazing but we have tried it all and stick with what's above.
You just never know. I never know if it is going to be good or not.... I have tried the chicken salad sandwich, that has always been good. The beef is sometimes dry. I tried the ribs, and they were very smoky tasting and very, very dry... I ended up giving it to my dog. The chicken was very tender and tasty.... I have mixed reviews on them.
Trying Something New. The brisket sandwich was great and so was the combination plate. Cornbread was dry and so was the coleslaw. After our waiter delivered he never came back until we were done. He did give us a 10% discount for that, but I probably won't go back.
