Need ingredients for a traditional Mexican meal? Look no further than this butcher shop and market..
The Scene
Gamesa, Marinela, Bimbo, Maseca, Ariel--to anyone who grew up with authentic Mexican cuisine, these brand names invoke nostalgic cravings that are satisfied at this family-run market. The Campos family has opened four locations, but its shop on the west side is still its most popular. Campos caters to a mostly Mexican clientele, with a small but steady stream of non-Hispanic shoppers.
The Food
Shoppers fill their baskets with everything from sweet breads and pork skins to fruit drinks, hot sauces and Jesus candles. You'll find maize in bulk, Mexican sodas like Sidral and Mundet, and Maria cookies. The market's biggest draw by far is its butcher shop, where selections range from cuts of loin and chicken legs to traditional Mexican meats like tripe, carnitas and chorizo.
