The giant dome in the middle of Temple Square is the famous Salt Lake Tabernacle.. The Background
The unique domed auditorium was constructed as an assembly hall for church members in the 1860s. Built before the advent of microphones, the tabernacle was constructed to be acoustically perfect so the congregation could hear the sermons clearly. Tour guides demonstrate the building's sound qualities by dropping pins onto the pulpit.

The Experience
At the west end of the tabernacle looms a massive organ, boasting 11,623 brass pipes. The organ itself is as much a tourist attraction as the building in which it is housed. Public organ recitals are performed Monday through Saturday at noon and 2pm in the summer. In the winter, recitals are held at noon only. Just below the organ are the seats for the award-winning Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Best Choir.. Apparently the above reviewer doesn't know a good choir when he hears one. Each choir member is put through a very competetive audition. They have to show off their ability to sing and it is very demanding. It is very difficult to become a member of the choir and you must have a tremendous voice for it. Not just anybody could do what they do. At least give them some respect for CHOOSING to give their time and talent to the world. None of them are paid. There's a reason Ronald Reagan and every succeeding President has called them "America's Choir."
