Editorial Review for Coney Island – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
Coney Island's main draw is its man-made attractions. At Astroland Park, the 1927 wooden roller coaster, the Cyclone, instills fear in the hearts of riders. Nearby, Deno's Wonderwheel Amusement Park provides even more rides for insatiable thrill seekers. Dolphins and sea lions frolic at the Coney Island Aquarium, while sideshow and burlesque performers make an appearance at Coney Island USA, the local emporium of American vaudeville.

They say NYC is a microcosm of America--maybe that's why the rest of the nation is so wary of us, and Coney Island is the very embodiment of that fear. Garish, vulgar, crowded, hectic, hyped, tacky--it's an unreconstructed city outing beyond compare. The food, the rides, the sideshows (yes, sideshows, can you believe it?) -- just get out here before gentrification sweeps it all away.

While the previous mayor did his best to sanitize Times Square, he pretty much disregarded this seedier, saucier part of our great metropolis. Yes, the beach is littered. Sure, the rides can be rickety. But frankly, I like it that way. This place is pure atmosphere from the moment I emerge from the F train to the second I get to the Freakshow--and everything in between. This is the best place to go when Bindlestiff isn't in town? As far as the amusement park, the guys working the games still have that hypnotizing patter. The roller coaster rides are good. Carnie culture isn't dead. It's alive and kicking in Coney Island.

Pros: Bright Colors, Easy Public Transit

Cons: Melanoma

With dilapidated charm and aging carnival garishness, this is an Americana experience like no other.  See the full editorial review.
