The Scene
This popular southern Wisconsin ski and snowboard resort resides in the Kettle Moraine Valley, which was once burrowed out by glaciers. But don't get your hopes up--with a 388-foot vertical rise, this is still Midwest skiing terrain. If you're into speed, the runs won't last more than a minute or so, but at least there's room for fast cruising.
The Slopes
Even with its manufactured top third, Alpine feels like a "real" ski area. Slopes are stocked with thick stands of trees. Beginners and intermediates get the lion's share of terrain: Half of the 12 trails are rated easiest, and there's even a special beginners area with its own rope tows.

I have never felt so upset! The place is what it is. Needs a lot of updating! I can live with that, however, BEWARE of hotel staff giving away keys to people with NO association to your reserved room. Just go to the front desk and give them a room number and they'll give you a set of keys - NO questions asked, not even a name. General Manager did nothing about the situation either. Apparently your privacy and safety is really not a concern of theirs.

Alpine Valley is one of the few options available for downhill skiing in Southeast Wisconsin. Although this hill is half Mother Nature and half man made, it has fairly decent terrain for the area. A couple black trails and a terrain park for the adventurous offer the only highlights here. All trails are pretty much identical to each other and are mostly for the beginner to intermediate. Last weekend was my first trip to the resort and will most likely by my last. Driving into the parking lot promptly at opening on a Saturday, I was surprised to find the place packed. The local junior racing league was holding a meet, which did not happen to be posted on the resort website the day before. Only after getting on the chair lift did I notice that two of the main trails were closed and off limits for this. It wouldn’t be such a big deal (it is junior racing after all), but it closed most of the hill that had any decent terrain. After an hour and a half the parking lot was full and the only black trail left open was too packed to enjoy any more. I packed up and issued a formal complaint with management, only to be told I should have checked the website and that they did not have any control over the portions of the hill closed. ?? On top of this, they had the boldness to charge the full price of $39 per lift ticket. If driving an extra hour or two to a better resort is out of the question, make sure to call for any events before you make the trip, otherwise settle for sledding in your back yard.
