Editorial Review for The Roof Restaurant – by Robyn Galbos
The Scene
The dining room is elegant, but patrons are casually dressed and comfortable. The Roof caters to both intimate diners and large groups. And you won't find a better view of Temple Square.
The Food
A buffet menu is served with a dash of refinement. You'll find a mix of hearty salads and a variety of entrees with simple sauces. A carver stands by to serve ham and prime rib. Warm, flaky rolls are brought to the table with honey butter. As for main dishes, make sure to sample a little of everything. Best bets are the ham and prime rib, but be sure to save room for dessert. There's an eye-popping array of sumptuous sweets, including cakes, cobblers, mousses and flan.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkNothing here but soda, herbal teas, hot chocolate and some specialty drinks. Alcohol and coffee are not served due to a lease agreement with the owner of the building--the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Know Before You GoCall ahead to find out what's offered. The buffet menu changes daily according to what's fresh on the market.

My wife and I dined at The Roof this weekend and were greatly disappointed. The food was universally underwelming....tough meat, bland pasta salad, watery chowder, flavorless fish. Only the dinner rolls and mashed potatoes were delicious but that far from justify's the $90 we spent. Many reviews for The Roof here seem to pit Mormons vs Non-Mormons. This is of course silly when it comes to reviewing a restaurant. For the record I would like to say that my wife and I are Mormon Church members in good standing and still despised this experience. You can even tell my bishop I said so! This meal would have been okay had the total check come to about $35 instead of $90. The food here simply doesn't justify the price. If you want top notch chowder, fish, and desserts, go to Market Street. If you want a fabulous steak, go to Ruth's Chris.
Pros: Good service, great view, nice ambience.
Cons: Food is mediocre at best and price is not fair at all.

My wife and I went to eat at the Roof for our anniversary. The building and view were amazing, but the food was...lacking. The buffet has less of a selection than Golden Corral, with the same quality food. For what we paid I was expecting steak made-to-order, or at least something "high end". The foodwas definitely not befitting of the price. It was a nice experience because of the view, but other than that, not worth it.
Pros: Beautiful view
Cons: Too pricey
