The Scene
The one-room dining space seats business folks, small groups of friends and couples in large, simply dressed tables and booths. Colorful portraits of Modigliani-like muses dot the walls, while muted lighting and a Spanish soundtrack (ranging from meditative to lively) envelop patrons in a comfortable, intimate setting.
The Food
With a menu revamping by famed Madrid chef Nacho Basurto, old favorites and new items showcase the range of Spanish cuisine. Seafood stars in many of the house tapas, such as the seafood-stuffed piquillo peppers in red-pepper sauce, perfectly balanced in texture and fresh seafood and piquant sauce flavors. Entrees such as the lamb shank with port-wine sauce likewise rely on the sweet-savory balance, while the beef tenderloin with Roquefort cheese entices diners with richer flavors.

Since my last trip to Spain I wanted to try this restaurant so as to feel a bit of their amazing cuisine again. I am sorry to say that it was a total disappointment, not only because of the service, which was horrible, as if we were being done a favor by being there. The food was edible, as is any food in a fast food joint. The Tapa (a meat plate with tiny pieces of sausage and pepperoni) was ok but not for the close to 20 dollar price tag. You can enjoy a similar dish, but much better, at the Vienna Bistro in downtown, and for a third of the cost. And the Pollo con Pisto was nothing special, really. If I?m going to spend a 100 bucks for dinner for two I need them to give me a run for my money. This wasn?t it.

This is the first time in sixty plus years that I?ve felt compelled to write about a restaurant. The table was ok. The appetizers were overpriced but ok. The order taker (I wouldn?t call him a waiter) was inattentive which probably led to the steak problem. The paella was served at least 5 minutes before the other entrees. That is inexplicable. When the steaks finally came they were misplaced (medium rare and medium were switched) and one had to be returned. The paella was a major disappointment ? having called ahead we were expecting a seafood paella (for two). What we received was soggy rice with 2 clams, 2 mussels, 4 pieces of medium size shrimp, 4 miniscule pieces of fish and squid. The water was filled and refilled properly (which turned out to be a problem later}. After the main course dishes were removed the next interaction with the staff was not until a birthday cake was ceremoniously presented ? the show with great. But we wanted to order other deserts! We finally got a chance to order coffee. Last but not least the server knocked over a glass of water while we were drinking coffee and never apologized and never returned to clean up. We finally decided the waiter was never going to return and paid the bill ? I?ll never know why I left any tip.

We arrived at 8:25 for our 8:30 reservations and waited until 9:10 to be seated. The waiting area is a hall with one bench that fits 3 cozy people. Other people waiting are force to stand outside. We ordered several different tapas one being a seafood payaya. It was very disappointing that it only contained one shrimp, one muscle and one clam. We also tried the mushrooms in garlic and white wine which was very good. Everything else was quiet bland and over priced. The seating is very open and with the music and noise from other patrons it was impossible to have a romantic evening. I felt as if I were yelling throughout dinner just so I could be heard. If you have been told how great this restaurant is do not believe the hype you will be very disappointed.
