Editorial Review for Pho 99 – by Leslie N. Vreeland
The Scene
A sprawling, white-walled room with acoustic-tile ceilings and fluorescent lighting. Except for a Buddha print affixed to the rear wall, it's fairly soul-less decor. Here, the focus is the food.
The food
Many people know Taylorsville as Department of Motor Vehicles-land. It's Vietnamese-food nirvana, too. Though the menu boasts 86 selections, standouts are numbers 1 through 21, the "Special Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup(s)." They're "the reason we opened the restaurant," owner Tan Ho says. These are heaping bowls of rich meat broth, laden with vermicelli and fragrant with fresh basil leaves, hot green pepper and a squeeze of lime--comfort food elevated to the ethereal. Add a squirt of soy sauce, Hoisin or chili oil to make the broth saltier, sweeter or spicier, as you prefer. Rice or noodle dishes are tasty--particularly the tangy chicken and lemongrass or vermicelli with egg roll and char-grilled pork. But, really: slurp the soup.

Insider Tips
Veggie Veg OutThere are just a few dishes for non-meat-eaters on the menu, and all of them feature tofu, mushrooms, water chestnuts and combinations thereof. They are good, but not the reason to come here.
Dos and Don'tsBe sure to order a pot of aromatic jasmine tea -- the flowery flavor's a perfect partner to the soup's aromatic broth. No restaurant lacks a liquor license -- and it's also cash only (there's an ATM across the parking lot).

Finally, in a society in the culinary scene there is an authentic version of vietnamese. Being a big fan of asian food, most of the time you get a an Americanized version the food. This is true unless, you live in a city with a large asian population such as New York, Seattle, Tornoto, or San Franscisco. I found my entire time there enjoyable. One thing that one must do is go with friends or family. Friends and family will make up for the lack of ambienance. A must try!!!
Pros: Value for your money, Spring Rolls, Service
Cons: Ambienance

Just remember...the food is more important than the faded marquee. The spring rolls are unexpectedly good, and the pho is delicious. (Put the jalapenos in it, trust me.) Don't go expecting a fancy restaurant with candles and cushiony booths, but if you are just looking for an inexpensive lunch with a friend and great food, this is the place to go.
Pros: pho, inexpensive, not crowded
Cons: ambience
