Editorial Review for Q4U – by Peter Behle

The Scene
It's nondescript and half-hidden--just the way a barbecue joint should be. Wander in, place your order, then sit down and wait for one of the top meals in the state.

The Food
You'll love this place if you want ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork or catfish. When in doubt, go for the sampler--a good-sized portion of ribs, along with beef, pork and two sides. The catfish special includes a huge, well-spiced, fried-to-perfection filet with two sides and a drink. Sides are almost as good as the meat. Top choices are sweet-as-honey yams, spiced-up beans and coleslaw. You'll feel too full for sweet potato pie, but you'll regret it if you don't take some home. Buy it by the slice or, better yet, get a whole pie. The Big Q special--available for takeout only--is a spectacular feast: one pound of smoked pulled pork, one pound of smoked beef brisket, four smoked chicken breasts, one full rack of ribs, sourdough bread, potato salad, beans and coleslaw.

Insider Tips

What, No Beer?

Q-4-U is too close to a school, so Utah's wacky liquor laws won't allow beer to be served.

Let the Good Times Roll

Don't skip the specialty side items--collard greens and gumbo are both fabulous, as are the red beans and rice.

The ribs my girlfriend and I shared were delicious, almost as good as you can find in the South. However, the sides we ordered were mediocre. Decent service overall. I'd probably go back just for the BBQ.

YUCK! The chicken quarter/leg was green! I'm not kidding... green in color! Mac and cheese was day-old, at best. Beans were soggy and nasty. Only two sauce choices (regular and spicy) both mediocre and NOT spicy at all. Ribs were extremely fatty and lacked flavor. Sausage was passable, but definitely not top-tier. pulled pork was decent, but again, nothing to make me crave it or EVER return. The drinks had barely any ice in them. The service was terrible! The waitress was chomping her gum. When we told her we were "done," she didn't bother to ask why we had barely touched our food (maybe they're just used to that). I had 80% of my food left since it was so nasty. I debated whether to take any of it home for my dogs. For the record, my two Labrador Retreivers thought this Q was wonderful.

Pros: Inexpensive/Cheap

Cons: Everything else: Dumpy place, disgusting food, terrible service

This "Q" is almost too good for Utah--you'll swear you're down South.  See the full editorial review.
