The Scene

At the downtown site, booths and tables fill three different dining rooms, as happily sprawling as the menu itself. Fish tanks add splashes of color and light, while on busy nights--which is most nights--contented patrons add their buzz to the bustle of busy waiters and the clamor from the kitchen. You will find the same menu at the Holladay site, in Cottonwood Mall, but a newer, tidier ambiance.

The Food

Caf? Trang specializes in Vietnamese dishes, but there also is a smattering of Chinese selections on the menu.

Start with plump pot stickers or the fresh spring rolls with a rich peanut dipping sauce. As for entrées, patrons generally stick with their favorites--salt-baked shrimp, lemongrass chicken with red peppers, charbroiled pork, but the lengthy menu offers room for exploring--clay-pot catfish, various noodles and vermicelli, or salt-steamed chicken. A relative bounty of vegetarian selections, including bean curd with lemongrass or with scallions and ginger and a tamarind soup.

Very disappointing. Seating was quick, but the table was sticky (solved with some napkins gotten wet in the restroom). Potstickers were room-temperature and soggy. Cream-cheese wontons sounded fantastic but were not impressive in flavor, just a spoonful of straight cream-cheese in the center, no spices or anything, kinda like biting into a chunk of cold butter. Chicken curry came out room temp also, with so-so rice that tasted instant and egg drop soup with too-long-frozen veggies in it. Menu said curry was medium-spice but it had zero spice. Fortunately my boyfriend's meal was better than mine, although was not what he had ordered, was at least spicy and hot like food ought to be. The honey-ginger tea was excellent and I wish the food was as high-quality as the drink. I had to track down the waitress after the meal to get a bill, and honestly I was tempted to just leave. The one star I'm giving is for the tea.

First and last time I will spend my money at CT. Wife and I didn't feel like cooking so we stopped in at the CT around the corner from the house. I ordered the sweet an sour pork, wife had the sweet and sour chicken (both to go). Chicken turned ok, but serving size (5 chicken nuggets) leaves a lot to be desired. Pork was overcooked, dry, an once again, serving size was pathetic (six nuggets...I have had croutons on my salad that were bigger).. They could have deep fried cardboard and served it with the sauce and had the same result. Rice and eggroll were fine. Seriously though, I would put Panda express waaaay ahead of CT regarding quality and portion size. I went back to the restuarant, hoping to at least get an apology, yet was given nothing more than a blank stare. They may be able to cook vietnamese, however they sure cant make a simple asian dish like sweet and sour pork/beef worth a d#$^.

I really like the food here. Especially the Red Pepper and Lemongrass Tofu. The atmosphere is nice. However! The staff is very strange. Mostly the waiters are boys...teenage boys...who hardly speak English - or if they do, they speak really softly and you can barely hear what they're saying. It's really awkward. Not on only one but two occasions have I had someone at my table not get their food on time. The first time I took my family to Cafe Trang for my birthday. My two cousins didn't get their food until everyone had already finished. The second time, I was with my boyfriend and we had to ask where my food was. He was nearly halfway done with his dish. They did give us a discount for the poor service however.
