In Short – Breakfast is a specialty, but this huge coffee shop and diner is known for huge lunch and dinner meals. Try one of the mega-meals--chicken-fried steak, fried chicken, roast beef or roast turkey--and, enjoy soup or tomato juice, salad, potato, vegetable, a beverage and ice cream. Kids love the spaghetti, served with Caesar salad, garlic bread and ice cream. The ham and cheese omelet is terrific, while the pork chops and eggs satisfies big appetites.

Simply the best!

by Dept1031

My family had been going to Coachman’s for years in Provo. They closed it down years ago and I missed it. Then my sister told me about the one in SLC and it is just as good as I remember as a child. I see there are a few complaints on here about how it is outdated and the food is bad. Well I have this to say to the anal retentive few who left a comment, please go elsewhere and don’t ruin my Coachman’s atmosphere with your snooty arse! Sure the decor is outdated, but come on, it’s cool! Unique, no place is like it anymore. It takes you back to the days when people cared about each other, smiled and said hello. The most important thing about the atmosphere is it's CLEAN. Whenever we go we get great service, you can tell the owners care about their business. The food was superb, HUGE portions, way more than I can eat. Delicately seasoned meats, cooked juicy and tender. The rolls...oh the rolls are so good you could fill up on them before you even see your dinner. They keep them coming and with our family they disappear fast. Salads are fresh and homemade, same with the soup. No prefab frozen bagged soups here. This soup is the real deal, and it comes in a novel thing called a BOWL! Not a little dinky cup. Pretty much everything on the menu is worth having, I have not been able to try it all yet as they are so far away. This is a very good choice for an enjoyable relaxed meal anytime of the day. Those of you who like chain restaurants and are ok with mediocre food, and service laced with apathy would probably not agree with me....

  • Pros: Good food, Friendly service, Family owned, Nostalgic.
  • Cons: Only takes cash

Stumbled upon this great find

by Umberlee

We were a little leery about this place, seeing it from the street. The sign and building are really outdated, but I was intrigued by the fact it was advertising for pancakes and lobster. I love to find local places when we travel and try them out--why eat at an Olive Garden or something, you can get that anywhere? Well, we were not disappointed in this place at all. The selection on the menus is incredible--lamb, pork, crab, steak, sandwiches, breakfast...this place has it all! And I still can't believe you get soup, salad, potato, vegetable, drink, AND dessert with your meals. Our service was outstanding and our food was pretty much first-rate (I could have done without peas on my garden salad, and the soup wasn't anything to write home about). My husband got steak and lobster and I got the seafood platter and the value was much better than what you'd get at, say, Red Lobster...much larger lobster tail, King Crab instead of snow crab, not to mention two extra sides and a drink included.

The restaurant's decor is VERY out-of-date, but it's sort of charming in its own way. The women's bathroom in particular was appalling--looked like a peppermint threw up in there. But it also contributes to a unique ambiance--Coachman's is definitely like no other restaurant I've been to, and in a good way. Great place.

  • Pros: the selection, the prices, the value
  • Cons: tackiness, no payment by credit/debit

Its run by the Greek family of John Nikols for 49 years

by Delmonico

Coachman’s is a family-style restaurant and serves up heaping plates of comfort food and definitely is what the SL community wants and needs.

Its run by the well known Greek family of John Nikols for 49 years making the restaurant the longest independent family own in Utah

is known for its hearty portions, extensive children's menu and good, old-fashioned homestyle cooking. Staples on the menu include veal roast, fish and chips, fresh baked salmon , chicken fried steak, pastas , hamburgers, steaks, soups and country-style breakfasts served all day.

I will described it as a casual, diner setting that appeals to truckers, anglers, business people, families, church-goers, seniors and the younger set.

It is so exciting to know there is no one out there who won't like this legendary Diner.

After being in the restaurant business for 30 years, myself I know that this family is committed to using fresh, quality ingredients offering an extensive selection of fine chops, steaks and freshest seafood delicacies. I admire Johns’ Nikols tradition of making everything from scratch, including the breakfast pancakes and that is why is every ones favorite Restaurant.
