Editorial Review for Sugar House Park – by Jason Esplin
Overview
Today, Sugar House Park is a favorite recreation place; it wasn't always so comfortable. A prison was built on the site in 1854, before Utah was even a state. Although it was guarded with 12-foot-high fences, conditions were overcrowded and escapes were frequent. Decay continued and, in 1951, a new prison was built at the point of the mountain; Sugar House was later converted to a public park.
The Experience
One of the biggest parks in town, Sugar House offers many attractions: a duck pond, pavilions for barbecues, a soccer field, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, and acres of grass for picnics, frisbee, jogging or kite-flying. Several hills are perfect for sledding in winter. Parley's Creek runs through Sugar House Park and feeds the duck pond on the westernmost end of the park.

It's large, clean and almost always has something going on. The pond is pretty nice as well.

This huge park is a great place to come for a picnic in the summertime. There are lots of tables by the stream and plenty of playground equipment to keep kids occupied for hours. The perimeter is also a great walking/running path.
Pros: Picnic areas
