Editorial Review for Salt Lake Acting Company - Upstairs Theatre – by Mary Dickson
The Background
Salt Lake Acting Company attracts a loyal following of season subscribers by offering smart, sophisticated productions ranging from offbeat musicals to contemporary dramas that first debuted off-Broadway. Located in an old Mormon wardhouse, the theater has a lounge, a snack bar and, in the winter, a roaring fire in the lounge's fireplace. Tables and chairs are placed in front of the stage for cabaret-style productions of "Saturday's Voyeur."
The Experience
The main stage has been the playing field for Broadway hits like "Angels in America," "Perestroika" and "Death and the Maiden." A theater has been added downstairs for more experimental works. Salt Lake's Plan-B Theatre Company often rents the basement space for performances. SLAC regularly features works by Utah playwrights such as David Kranes and Aden Ross. But the centerpiece of every season is "Saturday's Voyeur"--a musical satire about Utah and the state's predominant religion, described as a "communal catharsis."
