The Vibe
Artspace is a charitable visual-arts organization, founded in 1979 with the purpose of advancing the visual arts in Salt Lake City by creating affordable housing and studios for artists. The initial project, located at 325 West Pierpont, has set in motion the development of an emerging cultural district within an area of the city that was formerly recognized for its blight rather than its promise.
The Space
The current phase of Artspace consists of the 81,000 square foot structure formerly known as the "Eccles-Browning Warehouse," which spans 300-400 West on Pierpont Avenue. They provide studio space and comfortable housing to more than 30 promising artists. Occupancy is 100 percent and a waiting list has been established to fill new quarters as soon as construction is completed. Additionally, Artspace has undertaken the upgrading of its natural environment. An Urban Garden, complete with indigenous plants, now occupies their southern boundary, replacing an old and defunct railroad spur.
