Editorial Review for Mikado Restaurant – by Robyn Galbos
The Scene
The dining room is clean, modern and comfortable. It's bordered on one side by a long sushi bar; wood accents and soft lighting add to the ambience. Service is friendly, but it can be uneven.
The Food
Some of the finest sushi in the city can be found here, and it's fresh, colorful and beautifully presented. The Red Dragon roll (king crab, avocado, spicy tuna, flying fish eggs and shrimp) is a favorite. Many of the combinations are enough to share, or you can order a la carte. Entrees include Mikado sukiyaki, prepared tableside with fresh vegetables, cellophane noodles, chicken or beef in a savory-sweet sauce. The Emperor's dinner combines huge black tiger shrimp and vegetable tempura with a teriyaki tenderloin filet. The tender ahi tuna is perfectly cooked--pan-seared with a coating of zesty seven-pepper spice, served on a bed of wilted greens.

We had a great meal at Mikado this month. A varied menu, excellent sake and some very creative and unusual sushi creations. Definitely a new favourite for me. Read our full review over at Gastronomic Salt Lake City.

My husband and I often frequent mikado downtown. They used to have discount sushi days with a customer card that you sign up for but it has recently been stopped. I live for the connect roll. The miso soup is so-so but my husband really likes the salad and teriyaki chicken although the portion size constantly changes with the plating, which can be disappointing. It's a little over priced so we don't go as often as we'd like but it's not enough to keep us away. Be aware of conventions in town, the place can quickly become packed as it is across the street from the convention center.
Pros: tasty sushi
Cons: parking, crude talk at sushi bar when rest. is near empty
