Bartenders Cold Shoulder. My fiance and I have been going to the Market Street Oyster Bar for years now. We've always appreciated the restaurants amazing atmosphere and its excellent customer service. The food is great and the drinks are too. We are kinda late night goers so on the average we usually end up make out way to O.B. probably the last hour to 2 hours before close. We've noticed these last six months or more that the food has stayed the same but the customer service at the bar has certainly gone down. The bar tenders, the female bar tenders more so then the males, will make you drinks but a lot of the time you have to get their attention and it progressively gets worse as it approaches closing hour. Towards the last hour it seems that they are put out that you are ordering another drink, you practically have to wave a red flag to get their attention cause they intentionally go out of their way to keep their back to you or congregate if the managers not around. I've always felt welcome to ask the kettle cooks to get me another drink but am usually disappointed to find that they have to get the unfriendly bar tender who gets to collect the tip-seems to me maybe the kettle cooks should become the bar tenders since they seem to be a lot more cordial then the bar tenders are )-:…
Great drinks, but way over rated food..
I've been going to the Market Street Oyster Bar and Grill for many years and although the staff is great and the drinks are good the food however is glorified Denny's. It's so stuck in the 80's and
is resistant to change.
Note to the owner...what worked 30 years ago was great...then but now it's tired. Let the kitchen update your menu, it's becoming embarrasing for you and besides the oysters and cocktails there is really no reason for us to keep buying your outdated schtick any longer. I know you have talent in the back of the house and you should allow them more specials and change out some of your menu items. Keep some of the clasics like the clam chowder and fish and chips, but update the menu! PLEASE!!! I mean Broiled Mahi-Mahi with a slab of pineapple on it? Grilled Halibut with run of the mill Tartar Sauce? Everything and it's brother or sister slathered with hollandaise that sits too long under the heat lamps, thus becoming like an omlet perched on your meal....? See what I mean about glorified Denny's? You have seriously lost your edge and are in danger of becoming irrelevant. You have a great staff, that is actually trained, a definte big plus for Utah. You have a beautiful decor with all the glass and chrome, but don't stop there and hang onto your laurels hoping no one will notice. We do. The restaurant biz is like a swimming shark once you've stopped moving forward you start to sink and die. Get out once in a while and visit other up and coming places that continue to grow and get better. Get inspiration from where ever you can you desperately need it.
Jim (02/16/11) I'm sorry to say about your review, it does get better, alot better. Try any seafood place in any other major city in the United States and you will see what I mean. Heck, try Park City for a change like Wahso or Grapa that are trying to stay in the same culinary century.
Getting back to the owner (Gastronomy)...since you are a chain and hope to expand check out what they are doing at McCormick & Schmick's, The Palm or Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchens.
You have a great thing going, but if any of the above were to set up shop here you would be done inside 3-4 years. My advice, get out of your office and talk to the staff...you know the ones in the actual restaurants??? and you will find they agree with me.…
Doesn't get much better.
I have been coming here for years. It is a great place to come with friends or to meet new ones. Also, a great place to be seen at. Food is fresh, service is friendly. What they do works and it
shows. This place has been a popular spot for both regulars and business travelers for about 30 years.
Keep up the good work.…
Great Food, Great Staff, Horrible Manager.
I have been a regular at the Downtown Oyster Bar for several years now. My husband and I went in before a Jazz game for dinner a few weeks ago and we sat at the bar as we usually do. The bartender
was fantastic and our dinner was amazing as always, however we were extremely offended on how we witness the manager Todd Johnson treat the bartender. My husband and myself thought right away that this man doesn't respect his employees and especially doesn't know how to treat a female employee. I can hear him reprimanding the bartender and threaten to fire her right in front of us. I am not sure what the reasoning behind it was but we know that bartender did not deserve such treatment and we can see her crying after this Manager left. I personally was very offended and outraged at such an incident. The service has always been great from this Bartender and she has always made my husband and I feel at home everytime we come in.
Although we love the food and staff, we decided to not to return and support such harassment by this manager and the company that hired him.…
Do Not Go There!!!.
One time I went there and they ran out of pasta and had to cook more. Thankfully the manager let us off the meal for free. Don't eat there, I'm sorry, It is not worth paying the price for the
seafood there. First we live in Utah and even if the seafood can get here quickly, it is not worth freakin $40 a plate. Plus the Oysters are not that good for the price they ask ( pretty petite oysters "where is it"). There tends to be partygoers there at the bar, then the others that eat at the tables. It is just as easy to cook a nice juicy stake at home for $25, than pay an outrageous $45 or $50, whatever the price is for that matter.
*I was at the counter one night and I saw a waiter and he had a hand-cloth tucked in the back of his pants and it looked like he might have had a small blood stain ( don't take my total word for it )
*Way over-rated, especially the one in Cottonwood area in SLC, Utah.
* Valet Parking, PLEASE!!!
Don't waste your money on this business, go eat somewhere else.…
