Editorial Review for Belgian Waffle & Omelet Inn – by Peter Behle

The Scene
It's big and casual, usually filled with big families, seniors and kids from across-the-street Hillcrest High. On the weekend mornings, expect to wait a few minutes for a table.

The Food
Surprisingly, you'll want to stay away from the namesake Belgian waffles--they come loaded with whipped cream, ice cream or processed fruit. Instead, go for the garbage hash (cheese-covered potatoes with ham, bacon, onions, peppers and mushrooms) or one of the gargantuan omelettes (they come out looking like a pancake, served flat and smothered with cheese). Don't be surprised by the use of canned mushrooms. Lunch and dinner choices range from burgers and sandwiches to giant platters of roast turkey, pot roast and chicken fried steak.

Ski Stop

Stopping here is a natural for skiers¿it's right on the way to Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. A big breakfast here and you'll be set all day.

Who Wants Ice Cream?

Some come by just for the ice cream¿banana split ($4.25) and Ice Castle sundae ($3.25) are popular, as are malts and shakes ($2.75).

The service was kind of slow and the the restaurant's overall appearance isn't impressive but the food is tasty and fairly priced. Don't forget to play the blue squares video game in the lobby.

Pros: Food

Cons: Overall apperance

Okay; I'll give it this: during the day, this place doesn't have much going for it. Before 10pm or so, the food is tasty, but still on par with a Denny's or an IHOP. Let's face it, the place is a little dingy, but for late night grub, it is beyond compare. The night waitress, Kelly, is super friendly, and always on point. The "graveyard" chef is fantastic. Amazing garbage hash, amazing omlettes, amazing french dips, amazing cheese fries. This place is not for the calorie counter, so it is a rare treat, but one well worth it. The prices are excellent, the staff is fantastic in the evenings, and I've never had a better "late-night diner" experience in the Salt Lake valley. Bottom line; it's so-so during the day, but if you're looking for late-night grub and a warm atmosphere; this is the place to be.

Pros: Fantastic late-night service and food, Parking, Value for money

Cons: So-so day service
