Chef Jiro was born in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from the Seishin Cookery School in Japan before he came to Salt Lake City in 1972, to work at the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, 47 Samurai, formerly located in Trolley Square.

In 1984, Chef Jiro opened Utah's very first Sushi Bar at Cafe Vicieus Rumeurs in the Triad Center. After that he worked at several Japanese restaurants and owned Yamato in downtown Salt Lake City before opening Suehiro Japanese Restaurant in 1990.

Suehiro Japanese Restaurant serves authentic Japanese cuisine. The menu includes beef sukiyaki, shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, chicken tatsuta-age, salmon teriyaki and tonkatsu, just to name a few. They also have combination plates, donburi bowls and udon noodles. Choice of sushi is featured on their menu.

Editorial Review for Suehiro Japanese Restaurant – by Helen Hodgson

The Scene
Located in a Midvale strip mall, Suehiro tends to attract shoppers and families that live nearby. It's a bright and busy place where the service is well-orchestrated but you won't feel rushed. If you get one of the six barstools, you can watch the sushi chefs at work.

The Food
If you love sushi, go for the all-you-can-eat (limited to one hour) sushi bar. Sushi takes an entire page of the menu: nigiri sushi, temaki sushi, maki sushi rolls, and deep-fried rolls. Sukiyaki, tempura, teriyaki, donburi, udon--it's all available. If you can't decide, select two of your favorites, like shrimp tempura and chicken teriyaki, or beef sukiyaki and sashimi. Accompanied by miso soup, a green salad, and white rice, the overly generous main courses make finishing any meal a challenge.

The food has never disappointed and the price for Sushi isn't bad. The Eel bowl is the best I have been able to find anywhere. The service is quick for a Sushi restaurant and the servers are very friendly. It is a great family atmosphere.

Pros: Fun family atmosephere

Cons: The price of Sushi anywhere is a lot.

I've been to every Sushi joint Utah has to offer and Suehiro is by far the absolute BEST. What makes them so good is the fresh quality fish that I receive every single time. God knows I'm a big eater; not once have I or the groups of people I've recommended over the last 5 years ever get a bad piece of fish or get crappy service. Now, if you go and your in a hurry, sit at the bar. If it's your first time, sit at the bar. Introduce yourself to Mike, Bernardo, Chad, or Clayton. Make sure you tell the new partner in the business Andy, that you're their for the first time. These people care about your satisfaction and they will make you feel comfortable. If you're taking family, friends, co-workers, or a date, etc. explain to them that your taking them to a kick butt, great tasting Sushi place that is very relaxing and friendly. They obviously have saki and beers, but try their mango-pineapple sakitini's as well. If you're looking to impress people with quality rolls, fresh sushi, good service then come here. Ordering the fire crystal (tempura fire crystal shrimp in the middle and a mound of spicy tuna w/ tai chili peppers and dab of red shiracha sauce on the top) is a must! If you want something alot crabbyish, get the enormous confidential roll and you'd better be hungry. I also reccommend that you try the Hamachi, Escolar, and Snapper Nigiri. Now let me share something with you...it's common sense: Open your mouth. Don't be afraid to ask the chef's for suggestions. And how else is any restaurant for the matter going to know what's wrong if you don't communicate with them? Here's the deal: they will fix anything if it's not to your liking. Gee, what a concept! So, if something goes wrong; say something. They are very good at what they do, but are they perfect? No, just close. If you're looking to get mediocre Sushi, go else where you'll find it. Enjoy! And be ready to be HOOKED...

Pros: Fresh quality fish, friendly owners & staff.

Cons: None
